    Not impressed.

I did wonder about the use of hop pellets for dry hopping… The beer has come out a green colour, very cloudy, with tons of hop debris in it. I did hold it at 5C for 48 hours after fermentation to try and clear it, but to no avail. It is really harshly bitter, as you’re drinking a hop soup.

Whether it will drop out in time, we’ll have to see.

If you’re going to brew this, I would advise you’ll need some very effective way to filter it.

    • Robert Neale

Hi Chris, If you have hop debris in the beer then yes, that will Taste bitter as you are drinking raw hop. If you still have hop debris in the beer then it was not clear enough to package. If possible the beer should be stored at as close to zero for as long as it takes for hop matter to drop to the bottom of the FV along with the trub. Also an FV with a tap (if you are using plastic) placed high enough so you are able to drain the wort off but leave the trub behind. Also if you move the FV before bottling then it will need to be left to stand again.
Without doubt pellets are hands down the best for dry hopping, just need to be used a little differently than whole leaf.

Wonderful kit. I’ve made this kit 4 times now and it’s the most popular ale I’ve ever made with friends and family – everybody loves it without exception. Will continue to make it as I’m finding it hard to top.

  3. paul72s (verified owner)

Fantastic IPA, had zero issues with the brew day and it drank really well early in the keg. Going to have to brew it again to see what its like after a few weeks, it went that quick it was so quaff-able, dangerously so for its ABV!

  4. Chris Raynor

    See my earlier review…

It did improve, once the hop debris dropped out.

Even so, it is very hoppy, definitely an APA! I think I would brew this again, sometime, but I’d reduce the dry hopping – just my personal taste.

  5. ajameskellerman (verified owner)

I surprised myself with this AIPA. I am not the most careful brewer and did a no sparge brew with this kit. The OG and FG were exactly on the predicted. A remarkable crisp beer. A bit light in colour but I’m just about to order my second batch.

  6. Jon Page

This is my favourite all grain IPA kit. It’s relatively straightforward only using centennial hops. I’ve found best results using WLP-007 yeast and treating the water to “Hoppy Pale Ale” profile in Beersmith – South Wales is very soft.

  7. Rupert Comrie (verified owner)

Brewed this but with US05 yeast. Absolutely superb. Better than most of the rubbish in supermarkets. Looking forward to brewing again TBH

  8. Michael Harper (verified owner)

When I brewed this I either added under measured the water that I added or miscalculated the losses, but I exceeded the OG by quite a way and ended up with a fantastic tasting 9.2% beer. I don’t have the ability to cold crash but still have a nice clear beer. I’ll definitely buy this again.

  9. RJC (verified owner)

100% recommend. Has become a regular brew for me as one of my all time favourite beers now 👌🏻

  10. Michael Walker

This is a great beer which looks, smells and tastes great. I cant wait to try the Premium Version.

  11. bown.martin (verified owner)

I bought this for my first attempt at kegging, and also my first attempt at dry-hopping, and quite simply it’s the best beer I’ve ever made. Full of flavour, cleared down nicely, and extremely moorish (which is a bit of a problem at this abv!). It didn’t last long and I will be buying more.

  12. Antony Morris

Just brewed this. It’s been kegged a little over 10 days and its really drinkable and getting better. Piney, resinous, hoppy. Really good recipe.

  13. Ralph Hughes (verified owner)

Easily my best tasting beer so far. I didn’t get the same colour as the picture but the taste of the beer is as good as it gets! Brilliantly balanced, hop forward bitter IPA. It took 4 weeks to fully develop so patience required for this one but well worth the wait!! Tempted to buy the premium version to taste the difference – is it much better?

  14. Jonathan Cox

Quite simply the best beer I’ve brewed.

  15. Mark Targett (verified owner)

Delicious beer. One of the best I’ve brewed.

    Fermentation problems? Yeast?

I brewed this using a BIAB method. Everything went well, I got 19L at 1.064 in the fermenter, volume a bit lower than planned due to higher losses on transfer from kettle to fermenter.

I rehydrated the yeast as suggested by Lallemand guidance. (100mL water at 31deg, stand 5min, added wort to bring down to 25deg then pitched).
Pitching temp was 22deg, during warm days in July. Fermentation started very quickly with fast bubbling after 24h. Could have stayed at this temp or 23deg for at least 48h before cooling down a bit.

After 9d no activity, yeast cake at bottom of fermenter. Samples were hazy with strong alcohol/prickly taste. Prepared leaf geletin and added, beer well cleared 5d later (19d since pitch). FG = 1.010

    Primed and bottled, all okay.

After 2 months in bottle, there is still strong/unpleasent alcohol taste, I’m wondering if the fermentation has gone wrong and produced some side-products, my experience doesn’t seem to match the other reviewers and I’d hesitate before trying this again.

It’s a shame because the hops and beer smell great, and I really love strong IPAs, so I think something went wrong.

    • Robert Neale

Hey Graham, as brewers we have all had a batch that didn’t turn out as planned. I would suggest that you have some form fusel alcohol, this can be caused by a temperature spike during fermentation. Somewhere there is definitely something amiss as this is one awesome beer!

  17. James Cross (verified owner)

Brewed this in two pots as a BIAB using Protafloc, fermented under 7 psi in a Fermzilla. Yeast and hops settled quickly, cold crashed on day 9 and was drinking delicious, smooth, hoppy IPA straight from the Fermzilla on day 10. Marvellous!

  18. Philip Brining (verified owner)

This is without doubt a fantastic beer and proved to be THE most popular recipe of all the 35 brews I did over the last 18 months. I’d encourage those who have had questionable results to give it another try. It’s not the cheapest per bottle compared to other recipes but i honestly think it’s worth it.

  19. Dave Hanlon (verified owner)

wow! I used the water volumes exaclty as per the recipe and got 3ltrs of wort more than expected. Had to ditch a ltr or more of it. The pre-boil gravity was 1.060 and the OG was 1.069. Mash efficiency was 84% and brewhouse efficiency was 85%
Fermentation was rapid and very lively and the trub was huge. Got 19 ltrs into the corny keg with a couple of ltrs left in the FV
An amazing recipe and I’ll use it again. Beer not ready yet but it already tastes great and looking like its gonna be a classic.
    Dave Hanlon

  20. Graham Smith (verified owner)

So I brewed this again, after building a fermentation fridge. All of the sharp/strong/unpleasent alcohol taste is gone in the second batch, I agree with the above comment that I probably had some fusel alcohols in the first batch. Now the beer has a very pleasent strong alcohol taste. 🙂

So it’s a great kit, and I’d recommend it wholehartedly.

(MM great as always, every order so far has been spot on.)

  21. Symeon Breen (verified owner)

Excellent beer. TBH i think it is the best one I have ever brewed, I would gladly pay for a pint in a pub. I went over on my numbers and ended up at around 7.3% but still beautifully balanced and really tasty. As usual the Malt miller instructions, ingredients and delivery where impeccable.

  22. Samuel Dalton (verified owner)

Needs Two to Three Packets of Bry-97

I gave it some time before reviewing hopeful that the beer would improve. I think if you get this kit buy at LEAST 1 extra packet of yeast, the brewfather app said 2 to 3 packs. I’m getting a alcoholic flavor which I assume is from stressed yeast, I have full temp control and have had many successful brews from malt miller before the beer is drinkable and will be drunk its just a shame it has a bit of a off flavor.

    Maybe I was just unlucky

    ABV 7.5%
    OG 1.072
    FG 1.015
    Temp 20C – 21C raised to 23C for D rest at 1.020

Will report back if anything changes. Again its only slight and will still enjoy the beer.

    Sam

    • Robert Neale

Hey Sam, thanks for sharing. For the BRY-97 the pitching rate is between 0.5 and 1g per litre so one pack should suffice as it will ferment up to 13%. Looks like you got great efficiency as you had a starting gravity 9 points overshoot. With a starting gravity that high, yes upping the yeast count maybe advisable.

  23. Samuel Dalton (verified owner)

See previous review – So everyone that I have gave this beer to has said its amazing and they can’t taste anything wrong with it.

  24. Lee Norris (verified owner)

This is one of my go to beers. Last time I tried the premium version and it is better. Harvest the yeast and use in this version. I have made this at least 6 times now. Excellent.

  25. Iain Gillespie (verified owner)

Definitely my favourite all grain brew. I’ve made this kit a few times now with consistently good results, so I must have it right! Stunner of a beer, and definitely worthy of the title of ‘best beer in the world’.

  26. Nigel Macey (verified owner)

This really is a fantastic IPA kit-just about to brew this again as my neighbour has bought me back some of the original Bell’s Two Hearted IPA from the States🇺🇸🍺.
I used the included NBS West Coast yeast(included in the kit that i brewed last year)-going to use either Lallemand BRY-97 or Mangrove Jacks M44 West Coast yeast this time,
    Highly recommended.🍻

  27. Stephen Simpson (verified owner)

This is one of our regular brews, love it. The last time we brewed it was 28/10/22 and it cost £24. I know everyone is jumping on the cost of living crisis but £39? Really £15 pounds more? Why?

    • Robert Neale

Hey Stephen, glad you like the recipe, we love it!! No, we are not “jumping on th accost of living crises”. There are two really good reasons for the price increase, bit of a double whammy. Prior to December 2022 we had been subsiding the cost of ingredients within our recipe kits, they were actually cheaper than buying the ingredients separately. There is a lot of work that is involved in putting a recipe pack together and we simply were not able to keep this subsidy going, it made no business sense at all as we were loosing money on some kits. Plus, the cost of hops, yeast and malt have jumped considerably. Add both together and that is where the increase comes from. You may have noticed that businesses in the home brew and wider sector have gone bankrupt, this is a real situation within our industry, we have to charge the correct prices to protect our business.
We are the best in the business and will not lower our standards. We have introduced a range of kits that make the use of some lesser used ingredients that come in at a lower price point, check them out here https://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product-category/ingredients/recipes/all-grain-recipes/true-to-style-all-grain-recipe-kits/

Best brew up to date, absolutely delicious. Definitely recommend it and I will be doing it again and again….

  29. Dominic Neary

great beer. Dead easy to make and came out beautiful. Not one where you are going to drink more than a couple of pints in one sitting. Reaction of local beermakers was “wow”.
