Elusive Brewing x Burnt Mill x The Malt Miller – IWD 2024

CALLING ALL WOMEN HOME BREWERS!!!

To celebrate and continue our annual recognition of International Women’s Day here at The Malt Miller, Jo has teamed up once again with Ruth over at Elusive Brewing to bring us another collaborative beer and homebrew all grain kit! This year we are also going to be joined by the amazing Sophie de Ronde from Burnt Mill, the founder of the collaborative IWD brew days here in the UK! We’ve got an all-grain kit here which we want you all to join in brewing, share with your partner, bring others into the hobby, or just simply enjoy as a way to support IWD 2024

As before, the beer style chosen reflects the breweries involved with their DNA running through the recipe. We’ve gone for an amazing West Coast IPA this time that takes inspiration from both Burnt Mill’s approach to the style along with Elusive’s take on all things West Coast! The grist comes directly from Sophie at Burnt Mill, with some signature additions such as Chit Malt for the instantly recognizable head you’ll find on their beers. Then for Hops, there is a blend which reflects the approach taken at Elusive, featuring both BarthHaas® Pure Hop Pellets and BarthHaas® Incognito in the Whirlpool then a classic dry hop of both Citra and Centennial. The yeast chosen is Elusive’s house strain, WHC LAX.

The finished beer is a beautifully well-rounded and classic West Coast IPA, with malt sweetness underneath an appropriate amount of bitterness followed by a hop presence that evokes pine trees, grapefruit, heady dankness, and resin. A walk in a pine forest on a bracing autumn day, in a glass.

To also take the notion of collaboration further we have included a vial of Clarity Ferm from White Labs, which you can add at the same time as pitching your yeast to end up with a finished beer that is Gluten reduced, which is a notable method used both by Burnt Mill and also us here at The Malt Miller, so all our team can enjoy beers we have brewed.

The recipe forms a great beer, but it also acts as a base for you to be creative! If you fancy swapping out the yeast, adding to the dry hop, building the grist up a little; then do as you see fit! We’re keen to celebrate in your creativity!

Now on to the fun stuff! We will be brewing a commercial batch of the beer with Elusive and Burnt Mill in February, ahead of International Women’s Day and then on Saturday March 9th we will be hosting a bottle share in London with the team involved with the brew! We would like you all to come along, bring your bottles or cans of this beer, or any other beer you have brewed, for us all to try and celebrate amazing female home brewers! We will have some partners from the brewing world along with us again as we wish this to be a place where you can learn about careers in the beer industry, not just brewing. We also want it to act as a hub for you to learn and grow in the wonderful hobby of home brewing, so come armed with great questions and ideas you would like to run past us all!
