True To Style – All Grain Recipe Kits #16 Black Lager

These all grain kits are all designed with one thing in mind, making great tasting beer at affordable prices. We’ve built and created this range to offer our first “core” range of all grain kits that represent either great ingredients, methods or beer styles which we adore.

All of them are 23 litre batches and come in at sensible strengths for the mid week beers or sessions at the weekend! Read our full blog post on this range here!

This Black Lager is in the style of a German Schwarzbier, which is a clean finishing lager style with some roasted malt depth to the flavour along with a slightly higher bitterness. Youll find this beer to be surprisingly refreshing and drinkable with a delightful roasted malt character! Perfect for drinking around a hot fire on a cold winters day.

Secondary additions:

As this is a lager recipe some patience is desired when fermenting, under normal circumstances fermentation should be completed in 3-4 weeks however this may be sped up if fermenting under pressure at a higher temperature.

We would also suggest a period of lagering after fermentation is complete to allow for maturation of flavours. Ideally between 3-6 weeks.

We have supplied a single packet of yeast in this kit. To ferment your batch in a healthy manner we would suggest that your either build a yeast starter for this or purchase a second packet of yeast.

Excellent beer- brewed this on a kegland 35 litre digiboil with upgraded malt pipe and false bottom. I made a couple of tweaks with water treatment a little extra malt and a small dry hop addition to give some added foam/head retention which us alwats a struggle with dark beers/stiuts6 with my water profile. I have some heat control but nit much in the way of cooling so used the ambient temperatures to help with this and brewed in late January. This has now been in the bottles for over a month in a cold, but dry outbuilding. Fir me this is the best beer I have made, and I have really liked all the beers I have made. Looks like a stout with a lovely foam head that lasts all the way to the end of the pint. All of the complex stout roasty flavours are there with a nice mellow but bitter finish, but more lighter bodied and carbonated than a stout. If you are not familiar with a Schwarzbier it’s difficult to define but this one is delicious.
