Description
Chinook is a child of the ’80s. It was crafted by crossing USDA ‘63102’ with the good old English Petham Golding. The USDA stumbled across a firm favourite of craft brewers and it has been used the world over to create some stunning craft beer since.
We’re excited to be growing Chinook in the UK now on our farms. It is a reasonably hardy hop, perfect for the British weather and is in short supply due to its popularity due to its mix of spicy, grapefruit, pine and pineapple aromas. In fact, we sell out of this hop a lot, so if you are considering this hop for your next creation, we urge you to get it as quickly as you can to avoid disappointment!
Chinook is a dual purpose hop that is good for the beginning of the boil but really shines in the middle. This hop is excellent for American-style craft beers including pale ales and IPAs, however, this lovely little hop also lends itself to seasonal ales, stouts, porters and barley wines. It does have a hefty and distinctive aroma with a lovely spicy bouquet that many craft brew fans can recognise instantly. There are also some beautiful tones of herbs and pine in a fresh batch.
All of this adds up to a craft brewer’s dream hop! It is wonderfully versatile and creates some stunning beers. It is also a joy to brew with. The fact that it can be added into any part of the boil and bring a fresh and exciting taste is a thing of much amazement. Craft brewers continue to use Chinook because they can craft many fantastic tasting beers from one hop just by changing their timings.

A Herefordshire Hop Paradise
Brook House Farm has a long history of world-class, award-winning hop cultivation, thanks to our rich, red, Herefordshire soil.
Now, with the craft beer and brewing industry thriving, we have invested in one of Europe’s biggest and most advanced hop-harvesting facilities.
We currently have capacity to harvest and process hundreds of acres of hops every year, using the latest technology that ensures no exhaust fumes mix with the air used to dry our hops.
We encourage beneficial insects to minimize pesticide use and are passionate about protecting and nurturing the land we use, while also pioneering research into more sustainable and ecological farming methods.
This modern approach to processing is just one example of our commitment to giving brewers the very best raw ingredients to make the very best beers.
At Brook House farm the hop fields have full irrigation to ensure that the crop yields and size of cones are not effected by hot dry summers. This combined with their on site hop processing and pelletising ensure that the product quality is the best from an English hop farm.
If you’re new to choosing and using hops we have a handy Hop Substitution chart to help you find the right flavours or alternatives to what your recipe requires.
We also have lots of information in our Brew With Us help section of the website, here you can find lots of free information about brewing, how to use hops, and so much more.
