To celebrate 10 years of Burning Sky we were lucky enough to pay them a visit back in 2023 and learn more about mixed fermentation brewing with Mark Tranter. This then lead to Mark sharing two of their recipes and talking about how they brew their amazing beers over 3 films that we produce about the visit.

The culmination of these being Rakey and Stiffo brewing the recipes and Mark then suggesting that we should run a home brew competition giving others the chance to try their hand at mixed fermentation brewing.

We then launched the mixed fermentation competition back in December 2023, now its time to add another beer style, saison.

So, what are we looking for in the winning beer?

A farmhouse saison beer brewed to represent the amazing beers produced by Burning Sky Brewing. Think saison but refined, think about keeping that yeast in check so it doesn’t get too peppery, think about balance between malts and hops, you could even think about using fruit in the beer. We don’t want just straight saisons, this has to be your best saison.

The 50 competition kits will go on sale on Wednesday 8th of May 2023 at 11am.

We would suggest you can start to build your basket with your ingredients for your brew prior to this so all you then need to do is add your entry kit and pay one lot of shipping.

As with our last competition we will give feedback on brews received and judged.

This product comprises of the following:

100g of Whole Strisselspalt Hops

1 can of Burning Sky Saison Houblon

You do not need to use the hops provided but we’re hoping that you might find them useful for some inspiration seeing as they feature in many of Mark’s beers that Burning Sky brew.

Strisselspalt hails from the Alsace region of France around Strasbourg and is likely related to German Spalt and/or Hersbrucker hops. Thought to be an old land race, its acreage is dwindling due to its inherent low yield but it survives largely on the back of a strong domestic demand for the variety.

It is considered a pleasant continental-style aroma hop featuring subtle spicy notes, with herbal and floral aromas surrounding an undercurrent of citrus and fruit.

Saison Houblon

This crisp modern Saison is loaded with beautiful noble hop varieties for enlightened refreshment and maximum drinkability.

The rules so please read these carefully!

Strictly one entry per person. Anyone found to have entered twice will be disqualified completely. You are allowed to have entered the previous mixed ferm competition as well as this one.

Your beer should be packaged (3 x brown glass bottles or cans, 330ml or bigger) and must reach The Malt Miller on or before 19th of June 2024

Late entries will not be accepted. Clear bottles will not be accepted. Panda Pop bottles will not be accepted.

Ensure that each of the packaged beers are clearly labelled with Entry Number and no other distinguishable markings on the bottles. Please include a copy of the recipe/brew sheet and details of the fermentation process.

The beer must have been freshly brewed using a saison yeast strain and aged to present a beer representative of Burning Sky Brewery.

The winner will be announced after judging has taken place on 28th of June and the judge’s decision is final in all matters.

Visit Burning Sky and spend the day with Mark, watch a brew day taking place, get to spend time with Mark and his team discussing beer, recipes and get to experience a real behind the scenes view of this wonderful brewery. The date will be set with the brewery after judging and the winner will need to arrange their own transport and any accommodation required.
