Brewed this up in early March 2020. Brew day went great, hitting my numbers, although mash pH was higher than expected at 5.52.
Left in FV for about 8 days and fermentation was complete. The fermentation temperature was a bit up and down as it was so warm. Overall though it wasn’t too bad but it’s worth noting.
Racked to keg and to be honest after a few weeks I still didn’t rate it.
Anyway, a few months later and still not rating it I gave it to the in-laws and put onto hand pull for them.
Wow, what a lovely drop now. Devastated I gave it away. It’s a drink where you can sink a few on a nice sunny day, at 4.5%. Lovely clear amber red colour, enough bitterness to keep you wanting more. Note, it’s so much better served from cask using a beer engine.
IMO it’s not really like Hobgoblin but a damn fine beer along the same lines. Maybe its the water profile I used which makes the difference.
Anyway, in summary, a cracking beer, don’t expect Hobgoblin but instead an equally, if not better, beer.

This turned out more like a porter style beer for me. One of the best porters I’ve made mind you. The fermentation was insane, bubbling so hard it sounded like it was boiling, the krausen went up my blowoff tube and out of the bubble trap jar, fortunately no infections. I disagree with timtoos though that it’s more of a winter drink for me. Worth leaving for 5-6weeks
