About Northern Brewer Hops
Northern Brewer was originally developed in the UK in the 1930s and later became widely cultivated in Germany and the United States. It has since become one of the most recognisable and widely used hop varieties worldwide.
Its defining characteristic is its firm, clean bitterness combined with a distinctive woody and slightly minty aroma. This makes it particularly well suited to styles such as steam beer (California Common), as well as traditional European lagers and British ales.
Northern Brewer is highly versatile in the brewhouse, performing well in early additions for bitterness while also contributing subtle complexity when used later in the boil.
Heritage & Lineage
Northern Brewer is itself derived from Brewers Gold, one of the most influential parent hops in modern breeding.
It has gone on to play a significant role in the development of other hop varieties, contributing to the lineage of hops such as:
-
Northdown
-
Challenger
This positions Northern Brewer as an important link in the evolution of modern brewing hops, bridging traditional British varieties with newer developments.

Freshness, Packaging & Traceability
At The Malt Miller, we take hop quality seriously. All hops are stored in our temperature-controlled cold store to maintain their freshness, aroma, and brewing performance.
Each pack is nitrogen flushed and sealed in a high-quality, resealable mylar bag. This protects the hops from light, oxygen, and moisture — preserving their essential oils and alpha acids until you’re ready to brew.
Every pack is labelled with a batch code, allowing full traceability back to the supplier. This means you can access detailed information such as alpha acid content and harvest year, giving you complete confidence and consistency in your brewing.
We contract and source our hops from the finest merchants and farms around the world, ensuring you get the chance to brew with the same high quality product that professional breweries use.
Using mylar bags which prevent light degradation of the hops, flushing the bags with nitrogen to remove oxygen and cold storage of them until ordered by you, ensures the hops are as fresh as possible.
