Description

Willamette, the triploid daughter of Fuggle, was released as a U.S. aroma variety in 1976 from the U.S.D.A. breeding program in Oregon. The variety is characterized by a low alpha acids content, mild aroma similar to Fuggle and medium cone yields. It is more difficult to grow than most varieties.

The rub of the hops gives an estery/blackcurrant/herbal aroma that is very pleasant but can be quite strong. Some brewers have found it to be a suitable replacement for Fuggle and it also stands up admirably as an aroma variety on its own merits.

Characteristics

Willamette shows a predominance of resiny, woody aromas of incense, along with red berries, augmented with fleeting nuances of cream caramel.
