Which crush size should I choose?
Our standard crush level delivers best results in all brewing situations. Our fine crush gives increased efficiency at higher liquor to grain ratios such as in Brew In A Bag (BIAB) and no-sparge brewing.
Sold in 25kg sacks crushed only – Please do not select uncrushed or 5x5kg as this is not possible on this product
Phenol 50 Very Peaty!!
Crisp have been making distilling malt in Scotland for over 40 years. They now have two maltings, one in the traditional brewing town of Alloa and the other in the heart of Speyside at Portgordon. Between them, they cater for the malt requirements of Scotch Whisky production; plain, peated and high diastatic.
Over the years they’ve forged long lasting partnerships with farmers in Morayshire, Aberdeenshire and Fife, to grow low nitrogen (protein) distilling varieties which allows us to produce flavourful distilling malts that are prized not just in Scotland but also in Japan, the USA and Europe.
Their peating process on Speyside ensures the fullest absorption of ‘reek’ by the grain during the peat burn. Whereas with some dry smoked peated malts the flavour and aroma quickly fades over a short time, our method produces a lasting rich peat smoke character in the malt and so it can be transported all over the world without issue.
To cater to small and large distillers alike, our plain pot still and peated malts are available in 25kg sacks.
Utilising peat from Aberdeenshire and the same spring barley as our Premium Pot Still Malt, we slowly peat our malt to give fullest absorption of phenols by each grain. This results in a depth of flavour that will not fade in storage and will provide that hallmark peat character in your whisky.
Our heavy peated malt is measured at upwards of 50 ppm of total phenol.
TASTING NOTES
- PEAT SMOKE
- PHENOLIC
We’ve been making peated malt at our Speyside maltings in Portgordon for the past 20 years. We supply distillers not just in Scotland but all over the world including prominent whisky makers in Japan, the USA, Australia, Europe and England.
Our peated malt is prized for its intense smoke character and this is all down to our wet smoking method which allows the peat smoke to penetrate the barley kernel fully. We can provide various levels of peating dependent on the customer’s requirements and typically produce three levels of “smokiness”; lightly peated malt (15 ppm phenol), medium peated malt (25ppm) and heavy peated malt (50ppm). Higher levels of phenol are available on request.
Malt is the backbone to any great beer recipe, ensuring you have the best quality freshest malt can really improve your brews.
Our malt comes from the same maltsers that professional breweries use. All of our malt is purchased whole/uncrushed, which ensures that it retains the correct moisture levels as the maltster intended.
When you order malt from The Malt Miller we offer it crush fresh, or whole so you can crush it fresh at home using your own mill, or fine crushed for Brew In A Bag brewing. When we crush it for you it is done only when ordered, this ensures you can be sure of freshness and also receive the correct mix of big and small particles.
Your can order malt in 25kg sacks where we also offer the option to have it bagged in 5x5kg, by weight starting at 50g, or by building your own recipe on our Recipe Generator by the exact gram.
