It is a dried version of an English Ale yeast that has been characterised by high attenuation, low ester formation during fermentation and high ABV tolerance. It is a good top-fermenting yeast strain and is a great choice for pale ales, ambers, porters and stouts.
Origin: Hales Brewery in Seattle via Gales Brewery UK (unconfirmed)
There is lots of speculation surrounding the origins of the Nottingham strain, even though it is one of the most used yeasts in British brewing. It shares many familiar traits with a number of strains that are all closely linked/related to each other which suggest this is an isolate that is also used in multi strain varieties.
Oxygenation and/or rehydration may not be needed for generation zero but may be beneficial.
This is a top cropping ale yeast. Use of antifoam and/or leaving more head space would be recommended.

Our services offer a large selection of tests including microanalysis PH, IBU, ABV, Congeners, calories, final gravity, colour (EBC) and water/gluten testing.
WHC Lab is proud to propagate fresh, high cell count and quality yeasts. We do so by propagating fresh for orders and integrating stringent quality control throughout our production process. Every pitch of yeast is genetically tested on our QPCR system to ensure that our pitches are free from any contaminating microorganisms and are highly viable and metabolically active.
We work closely with 100s of breweries globally to make sure our product is of the absolute highest quality. We can help with strain selection or increasing fermentation performance for new beers or improve old ones. We can help improve any processes within the breweries with a consultation.
